What are Macrophages?

Macrophages (from the Greek “big eaters”) are powerful immune cells derived from monocytes, a type of white blood cell. They play a vital role in both innate (non-specific) and adaptive (targeted) immunity.

Their function is to engulf and digest pathogens, cancer cells, and cellular debris — essentially “cleaning up” the body. Macrophages also stimulate lymphocytes and other immune cells, acting as a central command unit that coordinates the body’s defense system.

The Role of Vitamin D-Binding Protein (Gc Protein)

Factors Influencing Vitamin DBP Levels

Vitamin DBP levels can fluctuate based on health status:

  • Trauma and surgery temporarily reduce DBP levels.

  • Septic infections accelerate DBP consumption faster than the body can replace it.

Normal serum concentrations range between 350–500 mg/l.

  • Levels below 80 mg/l correlate with poorer outcomes.

  • Levels above 100 mg/l are typically associated with improved recovery and survival.
